Traditional Academic Home Schooling vs. Unschooling

Unschooling has recently made the news, focusing on how children need to not be taught through traditional academic schooling, but though exploring their interests and learning in a natural, organic way. What are the pros and cons of traditional academic schooling and unschooling?

Benefits of Traditional Academic Homeschooling

Children that are homeschooled are traditionally advanced, often go onto higher education and lead normal, adjusted lives. The benefits of homeschooling are undeniable. Traditional academic homeschooling has the benefit of seeming “normal” to others. Children are taught out of familiar books on familiar subjects. They can meet educational goals at a set time-line and be tested and placed in a grade level with traditional standardized tests.

Benefits of Unschooling

Those parents who choose to unschool their children are often viewed by others as abusing their children, withholding education and stunting their capability to attend college and hold a good job. The fact that the “curriculum” is not recognizable or easily tested with a standardized test has educators and many parents questioning the validity of unschooling. This type of schooling, though, does have its benefits. Here is a way to ensure that a child can read, do basic math, write and understand the laws of science through natural exploration and daily life.

While there are many debates about homsechooling, unchooling and the public school, the bottom line is that each parent must decide within the boundaries of the law, what type of education will give their child the best foundation in the world we live in. While others have their opinions, it is important to attempt to understand each way of thinking and the outcomes before condemning any type of education.
