Fitting Outside Activities into a Homeschool Schedule
Many parents have extra curricular activities they want to involve their children in but wonder how to fit it into the regular schedule. Here are some simple ideas:
First, make a list of all activities. This list should include an A list and a B list. The A list activities are priorities and the B list activities can be dropped more easily if something comes up.
Sample activities to include on the list:
- Library
- Home Economics at Grandma’s house
- Music lessons
- Dance lessons
- Gymnastics
Once the activities are prioritized between the A list and the B list, those activities that are scheduled times need to be put on the calendar. Then, any activities that are flexible or are on the B list can be added into the schedule. It is important to keep a few e tips in mind as you do this:
- Do not schedule something for every single school day – you will become overwhelmed and your children will become stressed. Saying no is both healthy and smart in some situations.
- Do not schedule two things for the same day if possible.
- If the schedule seems too full, reevaluate the A list and the B list and pick at least one thing to move to a lower priority.
- Lower priority items do not have to happen every week. In fact, once a month might be perfect for some activities!
