Fitting Outside Activities into a Homeschool Schedule

Many parents have extra curricular activities they want to involve their children in but wonder how to fit it into the regular schedule. Here are some simple ideas:

First, make a list of all activities. This list should include an A list and a B list. The A list activities are priorities and the B list activities can be dropped more easily if something comes up.

Sample activities to include on the list:

  • Library
  • Home Economics at Grandma’s house
  • Music lessons
  • Dance lessons
  • Gymnastics

Once the activities are prioritized between the A list and the B list, those activities that are scheduled times need to be put on the calendar. Then, any activities that are flexible or are on the B list can be added into the schedule. It is important to keep a few e tips in mind as you do this:

  1. Do not schedule something for every single school day – you will become overwhelmed and your children will become stressed. Saying no is both healthy and smart in some situations.
  2. Do not schedule two things for the same day if possible.
  3. If the schedule seems too full, reevaluate the A list and the B list and pick at least one thing to move to a lower priority.
  4. Lower priority items do not have to happen every week. In fact, once a month might be perfect for some activities!
